Last night, the 52-year-old singer became the first black woman to receive the honour. She joins the club of Icon recipients along with Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Cher. In her speech, she fully addresses the #MeToo movement with her speech: “It’s a moment when at long last women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated, or abused. I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged by discrimination who support us in heart or mind.”
As I search YouTube to recount Janet Jackson performing at the Billboard Awards. I can’t help but be drawn to the comments being left by the many fans of the superstar:
“Janet was there to receive an award not to do a concert, the fact she sang live showed she had no intention of doing full-out dance moves that’s why the stage was filled with dancers for the people lucky to see her in the coming months this may be a preview of new things she trying.” –anthony barlow
“52 fuckin’ years old and slayed!!! I almost cried. What a beautiful talent! After all she’s been through she deserves every bit of the love she got. Had the crowd along with all the celebrities chanting “Janet! Janet! Janet!” – joetj
“Janet has nothing to prove to anyone, if I was her I would of just accepted the award and not perform, cause she should of received that award long time ago. At the end of the day she is the true Blueprint. If you know of a 52yr old black woman that is still strutting her stuff and getting down with the kids please comment.” –raymalco
I look forward to my 50’s when I can still slay it with the kids.
