I’ve been watching a lot of Netflix and completely binge watched The Home Edit series. Over the holiday break I was inspired to organize my bookshelf using the colour-coded rainbow system. And to have some fun with it, I decided to record the whole process. At the end of the day, I realized some key important concepts before even starting.

Tips to organizing your bookshelf the Home Edit way:
Tip #1 Find inspiration
There are many examples online on how to do the rainbow colour-coding system. Find one that works for you. I wanted to organize my black books on the bottom and the white books on the top (darker colours appear to be heavier while lighter colours appear to be lighter). That left the middle shelves and I choose to go red to blue, but it really is dependent on how many books with a particular colour you have.
Tip #2 Remove everything
This is probably the easiest and hardest part of the process. If you are a collector of books and big books (like me) they are heavy, lol. So don’t forget to stretch and only lift what you can. Sometimes removing them one-by-one is best!
Tip #3 Have some fun
It’s fun to see all the random toys, hidden books, and old magazines I kept throughout the years. Take some time to reminisce about why you kept them. And either release them or keep them.
Tip #4 Organize by colour
Instead of taking everything off the shelves and then starting to organize the books by colour. It’s easier to remove the books by colour and put them into piles so when it comes time to put them back on the shelf, they are already organized.
Tip #5 Editing in key
And the final tip, you have to release some books if you want this look. They don’t call themselves “Home Edit’ without actually having to edit stuff out. There was a whole stack of magazines that I had remove from the book shelf as well as a good 25 books that just could not and would not fit on the shelf. They had to be released and edited out. This is the key to having this beautiful look and feel. It is quite impossible to remove everything and then put it back on again in this style.
