A new era in the monarchy is taking place. As I watch the recap of the Royal Wedding one woman was being interviewed by a reporter asked her about her thoughts. She said, quite candidly, “she is the first black princess”. There are a lot of firsts happening today, Harry will now be known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Meghan will be known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. She will be the first person to hold that title.
This was a different kind of wedding marking a modern, diverse wedding: the Kingdom Gospel choir setting toes tapping, a young black cellist, and a breathtaking address from Bishop Curry, the President of the Episcopal Church.
Next was, of course, the dress, which was set off by a veil made to represent all 53 countries of the Commonwealth. Then, you have Prince Charles walking her future daughter-in-law, down the aisle. But, it’s the Canada connection that us Canadians can’t stop talking about. All three of Ben and Jessica Mulroney’s children were among the group of bridesmaids and page boys.
This was clearly an opportunity for the Royal Family to relaunch and reinvent. This wedding was about the future, a different future for the Royal Family. And we look forward to seeing how this will continue to evolve and affect the rest of the world.
