For the second year, Toronto-based developer TAS has launched the Farm Lot. Located in a thin slice of land on the popular King West district of Toronto. In partnership with Fresh City, Berry Fresh Fruit Co. and the Detox Market, this activation showcases that urban spaces can be used successfully for urban agriculture and educating the public in food security.
The Farm Lot is a simple installation with retrofitted wine crates for planter boxes, rustic signage, benches made from barn wood and woodshed on the ground to bring the space together. By planting a garden in the heard of downtown Toronto, TAS’ intention is to remind people about the myriad of possibilities that exist to grow food in the city.
A few weeks ago, The Farm Lot kicked off the summer with a Summer Market Party inviting a dozen of local vendors to showcase their assortment of organic, gluten-free and healthy treats. But while others came by to party, others came down to do their regular grocery shopping on their way home, picking up fresh corn, berry and vegetables.
Next time you are waling along King Street West, take a moment and enjoy this unique space in the heart of the city.
